Thinking Ourselves Into Existence
Talk & Discussion

… Wednesday 22nd February
7-9
Vanguard Space, CCA
FREE

As part of the resource space we will publish a series of pamphlets by artists, musicians and writers. For this event we have invited two contributors to discuss their work in the space.

David Bell
David’s talk will draw out his consideration of collective musical improvisation as a practice with the potential to create nomadic utopian spaces. He argues that the intense joys and deep frustrations often felt by improvising musicians resonate with those who try and realise such spaces in a more obviously ‘political’ sphere, and considers what might be done to enable such spaces to remain nonhierarchical and open the future.

D B is a writer, artist and musician based in Nottingham. He is currently writing ‘The Shape of Utopia to Come: Improvising Music and Nomadic Politics’ for Zero Books.

Marie Thompson
Marie has written a manifesto hoping to highlight the intimate relationship between noise and the ‘feminine’.

Aristotle tells us that ‘Silence is a woman’s glory’. But this silence is really noise abatement. If women’s noises are to be kept in silence, since they… Read more

Bridget Hayden/Kelly Jane Jones/Joincey Trio

Psykick Dancehall Present:

Part of the Thinking Ourselves Into Existence Exhibition (CCA)

Bridget Hayden / Kelly Jane-Jones / Joincey

B H recent solo work kicks up the dust of blues with layers of guitar and distant vocals that converge to form an abyss kicking improv.

K J-J plays solo as Belied Gunaiko, and in the world beating duo Part Wild Horses Mane; piercing space with syrupy tone float and waves of feedback.

Joincey is the man with no forename and a 1001 collaborations, so many it’s difficult to keep track of: Inca Eye Ball, Stuckometer, Ghost of an Octopus, and as My Carapace Is Leaking to name a few.

This is their first but hopefully not their last live outing together.

Nackt Insecten

Somewhere beyond the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow is a bridge to the Inner Rainbow sanctum of NI – solo minimal tone float, noise orchestras and free wheeling psyche drives.

Acrid Lactations Trio
Dr S and Mr C are joined by Mr K for some remedial snare, whistle, balloon and sound poetry workouts. Think faster!

Akke Phallus Duo

Akke Phallus Duo
… Jon Marshall (Hunter Gracchus) & Ben Morris (Chora) in a project that started life as a postal collaboration.

APD create wheezing & stuttering non-musics through broken mics and burst bellowed reeds, with the spectres of position, loss, resistance and the fruits of free-hybridity from the comfort and confusions of the First World.

Muris
Oddly quietly improvisation from Dr D and the cookery school queen Ms Rozite.

Cat Hawed
Brought together for last years Colour Out of Space Festival, CH is a collaboration between Jon Marshall, Hannah Ellul & Ben Knight (Helhesten).

Scraped, blown and bashed instruments spread across uneasy silences and punctuated by vocal caterwauling on the periphery on sense.
