‘School Trip’- Art Academy at Instal Glasgow

By Lauren Velvick, Islington Mill Art Academy

Last November three members of Islington Mill Art Academy, including myself, travelled North-wards to Glasgow in order to attend, and take part in a series of workshops organised by Glasgow Open School (G.O.S) as part of the tenth annual Instal Festival. Given our status as an alternative art school organisation, and rather academically referential title, I like to consider our visit to be a kind of school trip.

“A group of young musicians, artists and thinkers: creating an open and critical atmosphere for shared learning”

Glasgow Open School is not an object or an organisation – it is more a dis/organisation, orientation or objection. It persists rather than existing. It relates rather than insists.

Glasgow Open School is not ‘a group’ either – it is an accumulated set of amorphous conditions.
It consists in lists of strategies for an improvised research practice wary/hopeful for the past, wary/hopeful for and orientated towards the future. It is a dissemination/amalgamation of ideas that amount to an active narrative of context, critical positions, struggle & ways of being together. Through performance and other techniques, ideas are presented and developed; performance as a mode of thought. This research is a practice without end.

It is place in which people can develop and  situate themselves, for whatever purpose. It is ‘open’ something like open source: you can pick it up, copy it, take it, destroy it, and you don’t have to ask or say thank you. It is not orientated towards youth: it is excavating a long memory for itself. There are no artists or thinkers here (though art… Read more

Planning post-Instal: Finding Space: To dwell, to host, to camp, to share

Monday 1st November -7pm at 61 West Princes Street

An evening of planning for the week of activity post-Instal.
The general idea proposed a few weeks ago by Open School was:
“From the 15th – 20th November Flats and other spaces on West Princes Street and beyond will be open to the public for continuing explorations post Instal. Dormitories, Kitchens, Investigation Space and Performance Space will be provided to facilitate this”

Seems like there is a need to create an artefact – a set of recognised material conditions – a score – in order to communicate our position on the week clearly to the publics /the invited. This could also be useful in arriving at a wider level of understanding about participants commitments to the facilitation of the week.

An initial point of enquiry could be ‘To dwell to host to camp to share. Position towards the location. A difference between there and here?”
-i propose we bring reactions to this with us.

Reading Together – Ray Brassier’s Genre is Obsolete

Thursday 21st October -7pm at 61 west Princes Street

Towards INSTAL event ‘Evacuation of the Great Learning’ -with Mattin and Ray Brassier
- Come prepared to unground yourself. This is not your average book reading: Please read the chapter Genre is Obsolete from Noise and Capitalism.

You can download the whole book here:
www.arteleku.net/audiolab/noise_capitalism.pdf ,

Proposed Framework: Tables with three chairs and large pieces of paper. Crayons. First 15 minutes – who ever wants to can stand up and announce one thing each. Then people take it in turns to write one sentence on the wall. Then 30 minutes silent discussion on paper. Then each table has 5 minutes to perform out. Discussion.

MOVING TOWARDS OUR ACTION(S) AT INSTAL

We invite you to make proposals for

1.
overall structures of our involvement
methods of acting/reacting
over-riding frameworks, structures, and schedules
(i.e. A proposal to only step leftwards while in the festival, and we will only step rightwards during the non-festival and we will at all times salute Barry and Bryony – and nothing else )

2.
imaginings, objects, installations
ideas for specific events/happenings
both collective and individual responses
(i.e. A proposal to execute a pot and pan orchestra between 6-9 pm on the 13th of November throughout the `Tramway)

There is no proposal too ___________________________.

Mapping situations towards expected performance INSTAL working group

at Tramway, Pollokshields East 5pm – 7.30pm

At the meeting in Tramway last Tuesday it seemed there was agreement to set up seperate working events for the Instal set up. Monday night the space is explorable. We have been granted permission. for now.

OPERATIONS

Operations are us making acts with our tools to uncover ideas about what is happening.

Today Monday 16th, our tool will be maps, recording devices – paper, dictaphone, rope, tape measure, story, what happened here? perimeters, drop, corners, hand rail, dance<>floor, the conversion touches the old walls lightly – tramway touches the industrial age lightly. Hovering. what is in the gap between the perspex and the brickwork?

Please bring any recording devices

-Liam
