dis-place thiscollection: collective curatorship? open education?

at the Glue Factory from April 30th – 14th of May 2011

thiscollection is an attempt at a collective curatorship, GOS hopes to use thiscollection as context and provocation for discussions around alternative modes of education. This will include an open forum on the 30th April and 14th May. All welcome.

‘thiscollection’ on ‘thiscollection’:

All are very welcome,  we look to open engagement and reflection with the joys and pitfalls of attempts at collective becoming.

‘thiscollection presents a library of 56 films and 100 poems from professionals to amatuers collected from the postcodes of Edinburgh to the public for DIY curation.

…Collaborators are invited to browse the library and the processes of thiscollection’s previous showcases and in turn become eventologists or curators in the Glue Factory based on their selections.’

A Kino Pravda? A People’s Museum? An age of media patronage? what will this forest of contributions tell us? What will you bring to the conversation?

thiscollection seeks to understand how it can become a more open system and hopes through the exhibition to address the struggle for collective democracy at the end of an age of commodification, instead of a cacophony of individual expressions.

The obvious flaw with the day. If 56 films and 100 poems are presented as a fait a accompli then that is primary stage hiearchical curation, with a secondary stage DIY curation tokenistically tagged on at the end. Why are people’s choices being limited to what someone else has executively chosen for them to choose from?

The more obvious and better option would be to invite people to bring a work of art of whatsever sort, and people who attend curate from the very same self submitted selections.

Yes indeed like Liam and I had discussed a possible walter hopps style install but it has apparently been done in the gf. The reason why the 56 films and poems are a premise, is because the act of collecting has already been done and we are trying to learn from the processes and not repeat the exercise. It is not a suggestion at all that these works are the best, but it is an attempt at collecting from openness but now what and how can we investigate the systems of such a collection, when even the public we have tried to create through this exercise has already been problematic. we hope in this space to reflect and develop the convivial infrastructure which open setups can be celebrated. We do not intend for thiscollection to be the be all or end all but of a space where we pause and reflect, for it has been made and it has happened, and so how can we go forward, in this sense, we ask GOS’ indulgence and assistance.

Also the notion of collecting, is loosely used, it was more a matter of who responded in a space that was opened by a premise. So here are some premises dis-placed and we seek much valued perspective.
